About Tenterden Counselling Service
Tenterden Counselling Service (TCS) is a charity providing affordable, open ended counselling to the community in and around Tenterden. Established in 1983, TCS has a long history of not only providing support for the local community, but also providing work placements for trainee counsellors.
Whilst the NHS provides mental health support and access to some counselling, we believe that outside of those that can afford a private counsellor, there is a great need for longer term therapy. This need for a wider range of mental health support services has only increased in recent years with the advent of the pandemic and the changes it has brought to our lives.
In recent years, and partly in response to the pandemic, TCS has tripled in size and will continue to grow in 2022. After recruiting a number of trainees at the end of 2021, we are now looking to add some additional experienced counsellors to the team.
The Role
Our qualified counsellors take on between 3 and 6 clients and are supported by group supervision every other week of (2 hours per session).
We have a dedicated counselling room in Tenterden that can be booked for TCS sessions for in-person counselling and we also provide online counselling where required.
The Benefits
Group Supervision - This is provided as part of the role at TCS. The groups are a mix of trainees, newly qualified counsellors and experienced counsellors, with a maximum of four.
Training - We provide a budget of £150 per year for training for our counsellors. As we grow we will also be hosting our own training sessions that the whole team will be invited to attend. We hope to run at least 2 or 3 of these in 2022.
Working in a team - In our experience, working solely in private practice can be an isolating experience for counsellors. We believe having a team around you not only provides support but also helps you as a counsellor grow and develop, which undoubtedly benefits your work too.
Remuneration - Whilst we believe that anyone working for us should share in our spirit of supporting the community, we also believe that your value should be acknowledged and paid. We currently pay accredited counsellors £25 per session and experienced (but not accredited) counsellors £22.50 per session. We would like this to be more, but need to balance this carefully with ensuring the charity remains a sustainable organisation.
